The Municipality of Paxon -Paxos-Antipaxos Corfu map
In Greek mythology, the island of Paxos was formed when Poseidon struck the island of Corfu with his trident, so that he and his wife Amphitrite could have their own private and serene island.
It seems as if Poseidon accomplished his mission, as Paxos and Antipaxos are well known for their peace, serenity, and beauty. The Municipality of Paxon is composed of an assortment of islands just south of Corfu, with Paxos, and Antipaxos being the most significant. Paxos is the smallest of the seven Ionian Islands (the remaining being, Corfu, Ithaca, Zakynthos, Kefallonia, Lefkada, and Kythira) in both size and population, while only 120 inhabitants live on the smaller island of Antipaxos. The biggest village on the island, Gaios, is located on the southern portion of the island. It is unique, in that it offers hotels and travel accommodations for tourists, while being a working fishing community as well. The second biggest village of Lakka is popular for its peaceful and beautiful bay, with gorgeous views of the surrounding area. Loggos is the smallest of the three main villages, and is really only home to a few small bars and tavernas. As Paxos and Antipaxos are known for their peaceful and secluded environment, they are best suited for visitors looking only for peace and quiet, with a limited nightlife. In the case that the Municipality of Paxon, becomes a little too quiet, the vacationer has the option of taking a ferry boat to nearby Corfu, and the resort town of Parga on the Greek mainland.
